It sounds like he was trying to provoke it, and it probs didn't like that. If it really wants to keep everyone here, it might have erased the idea of leaving.
But we haven't been here for long, so we're not be as affected by it as they are.

I think the knives were just a metaphor - like poking at something to see if he could find a hole to make it out. And yeah, I think he did make it, just like we will.
